What makes a pet tag “smart”?
“Smart tag” covers three quite different things. QR code tags, like PetTag, open a page on any phone camera and need no power. NFC tags only work on phones that read NFC, held right against the tag. GPS trackers show where your pet is, but need charging every few days and usually a monthly plan.
For getting a lost pet home, what matters is that whoever finds them can reach you in seconds, without a trip to a vet to read the microchip. That's the job a QR tag does best, and it costs nothing to keep running.
Whichever you choose, UK law still wants your name and address on your dog's collar or tag in public, so a smart tag goes alongside an engraved one rather than replacing it.

Is a QR code tag better than an NFC tag?+

Can a smart tag track my pet's location?+
A QR tag can't show live location: only GPS trackers do that, and they need charging and usually a monthly plan. With PetTag in lost mode you're emailed whenever the tag is scanned, often with the approximate place it was scanned.
Does the finder need an app?+
No. They point their phone camera at the code and your pet's page opens in the browser, on any modern iPhone or Android.
Does a smart tag replace an engraved dog tag?+
Not in the UK. In a public place a dog must wear its owner's name and address on its collar or a tag. Use PetTag alongside an engraved tag, or a collar with your details on it.
Does it work for cats?+
Yes. Put it on a quick-release collar, and use the profile to say if your cat lives indoors, so a finder knows to get in touch rather than assume they're out roaming.
